Moonsighting for Muharram 1423
March 14, 2002 (Thursday): Rashid Motala reported from South Africa that moon was not seen on Thursday. Javad Torabinejad from Smithfield Utah (ICOP member) reported: "My son and I sighted the crescent in Smithfield, UT on 03/14/2002. I saw the moon first by using a pair of binoculars and then at 6:53, I saw it by naked eye." Gulamabbas A. Khakoo from Long Beach, California (ICOP member) reported: "Unable to sight the crescent this evening of Thursday, March 14th. I tried for almost 45 minutes from 18:15 hrs local time." Omar Domkus from Phoenix, Arizona reported: "My wife and I saw the crescent moon on the evening of 3/14/02 between the time of 6:55 and 7:10pm MST. I estimate its evelation to be between 2-5 degrees with a compass direction of about 254-260 within this time frame. It was very thin and faint. It was viewed by me twice within this time as well as twice by my wife. Its age was about 23:58 to 24:13 at the time of sighting." Youssef Ismail from San Francisco California reported: "On the evening of 3/14/02, we, my wife, a second sister and myself (i.e. one man & two women) sighted the crescent of Muharram at approximately 6:40pm from Windy Hill Open Space Preserve at an elevation of ~1200 ft above sea level about 30 miles south of San Francisco Ca. Tips of the crescent were at ~ 1 O'Clock and 7 O'Clock. It was very faint, and was only visible at first through binoculars. At ~ 6:50 pm the crescent was visible by naked eye and I photographed it."
March 15, 2002 (Friday): Mahmood Essa from Mombasa, Kenya (ICOP member) reported: "I am happy to let you know that I managed to spot the new crescent quite easily this Friday evening. Tomorrow, Saturday March 16 is thus the first day of Muharram 1423 for most of us here in Kenya." Taalib from Damascus reported: "We sighted the moon here outside Damascus on March 15, 2002 ~ 13 minutes after sunset. |
