Crescent never observed through 8² SC telescope:
Time observed was from 7:20 p.m.-7:29 p.m. (MST)
Moonıs (center) altitude from  3.3 - 1.6  degrees
Elongation of the Moon from Sun      6.8  degrees
Percent of surface that was lit      0.44 degrees

Local Moonset at    7:42 p.m. (MST)  12 May 2002
UT Time and Date of Moonset = 02:42  13 Dec 2002

Banded cirrus clouds left only 2 or 3 thin open bands through which to 
observe.  When scope was sighted on Venus afterwards, she was 
considerably out of focus.  Some experimentation is needed here.

I tried to sight the moon on Sunday evening and despite of a clear sky and suitable sighting conditions, I was not able to do so. There was no problem to see Mercury and the star Aldebaran. I started looking at the time of sunset and continued for about 45 min!

May 13, 2002 (Monday):

I saw the crescent moon on Monday 13 May 2002. Our local apparant sunset was at 6:32pm. First I saw the crescent with binocular at 6:49pm that's 17 minute after sunset. Then I saw the crescent with naked eye at 7:00pm ( 28 minutes after sunset ) till 7:10 & it was kind of difficul due to haze at the last 3 degrees & with binocular till 7:15.

The Hilaal was sighted this evening in Johannesburg. Cape Town was misty - very poor visibility.

Attempts were made to observe the new crescent by himself and members of rose hall town masjid and the rose hall town Islamic center on Monday, 13th May, 2002. The new crescent was seen without any difficulty at 6:10 pm (guyana time).

I saw the crescent on Monday, 13th May, 2002. It was first seen at 8:37 pm after sunset. The horizon had extensive rainy clouds. The new crescent was located in a clock position of approximately 3 to 8 o'clock, left of the elapsed sunset.
