Moonsighting for Ramadan 1423

Ramazan, the holy month of fasting for Muslims, will begin on Thursday, Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri Masjid Mufti Mukarram Ahmed announced here on Tuesday night. The new moon of Ramazan was not sighted on Tuesday and hence Ramazan will start on November 7, a release from Shahi Masjid of Fatehpuri said.

Hussain Khushaish from Kuwait reported: On Tuesday 5 nov 2002 , in Kuwait , many groups tried to sight ramadan crescent. In our group I estimate that there were more than 200 persons and more than 10 persons with binoculars. Out of this number six persons claimed seeing the crescent with naked eyes and those who are with binocular did not see the crescent including myself. As per mooncalc, the crescent hieght was 6.5 degrees & its stay was 35 minutes & was inposible to be seen even by telescopes which is close to accomulated tabulated records moonsighting. So Ramadan will start in kuwait on wednesday 6 nov 2002 either because of 30 days of Sha'ban for some pepole and for others due to false or impossible sighting. The rest will have Ramadan on Thursday 7 nov 2002.

Mohammad Odeh from Jordan reported: The crescent was seen from Jordan by Mr. Mua'ammar Al-Hadidi using binocular.

Mahmood Essa from Mmombasa, Kenya reported: I hereby take this opportunity to let you know that a number of us went to a hill top outside mombasa to observe the ramadhan crescent. The horizon was quite cloudy and thus we were not able to see the crescent. However, the crescent was sighted in other parts of the country and the chief kadhi of kenya has declared tomorrow, wednesday 6 th november to be the first day of ramadhan in kenya.

Rashid Motala from South Africa reported: The moon was sighted this evening, Nov 5 in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Moulana Habeeb from Guyana reported: The moon has been sighted here by approx 45 people at #78 JamAt and others in Rosignol so the Central Moonsighting Committee of Guyana announces tommorrow Wed 6 th is Ramadan inshallah.

Ghulam Dandia from Southwest Ranches Florida reported: The moon was sighted in Florida, the Southwest Ranches area, today November 5, 2002.

Muhammad Hafiz from Opa Locka, Florida reporetd: The Hilal/New Crescent was seen in Opa Locka, Florida, USA on Tuesday, 05th November, 2002 at 6:00 PM. The upper horn was pointing to 1 o'clock and the lower horn at 7 o'clock. It was about 4 fingers width and was seen for atlease 12 minutes walking home from work.

Gulamabbas A. Khakoo from Long Beach, California reported: Sighted the crescent this evening, Tuesday, Nov. 5th at approx local time 17:18hrs. The crescent was very thin and the top horn was between 12 & 1 while the bottom horn was between 7 & 8. It was slight cloudy and I had to use binoculars.

Farooq Badokhon from the Islamic Center of Las Cruces, New Mexico reported: We are pleased to inform you that we had sighted the crescent today 5th of November 2002 at about 5:35pm Mountain Time. The crescent was visible by the naked eye for a long time and we have pictures for it.

Mohammad H Rezakhani, from Los Angeles California reported: It is about 5:29 Pacific time, on Tuesday, I am seeing the moon right now, although we have fog and plotted weather. It is very clear and visible.

Crescent first observed through 6x30 finder:
Time = 5:17 p.m. (MST) 00:17 (UT)
Altitude = 11 degrees
Azimuth = 237 degrees
Elongation of the Moon from Sun = 15.6 degrees
Percent of surface that was lit = 2.00 percent

Crescent first observed with the naked eye:
Time = 5:34 p.m. (MST) 00:34 (UT)
Altitude = 8 degrees
Azimuth = 240 degrees

Hilal became visible through the C-8 just as the sun entered a translucent cloud bank. After the first sighting, it took me 4 more minutes to positively see the crescent again. Therefore confirmation would be 5:38 p.m. (local.)

Loay Sultan from San Diego reported: Even though there were some clouds here and there, the new cresent was clearly visible in San Diego, California. It was sighted around 5:25 pm PST and it was was visible for at least 10 minutes.
