In Kuwait on Sunday, 4 Sep 2005 I & a group of 12 persons could not sight the crescent even with 20*60 binocular. The sun disappeared 6 minutes before our local sunset 18:07 because of the layer of black haze of 5 to 6 degrees above the western horizon.

Muhammad Afifi al-Akiti (MCW Member) from Oxford, UK: Not Seen
At the end of the 29th day of of the preceeding lunar month (Sunday, 4th September) at the top of a mosque's minaret, a group of us could not sight the new crescent. The horizon was clear. The difference in setting times of the sun and moon over the local horizon [qaws al-makth] is 24 minutes. We prayed Maghrib and waited until moonset. By the time of Isha, there were no reports of any sighting from the East and we receive news instead that professional observers in Morocco could not sight the moon. We will therefore be completing [istikmal] 30 days for the month of Rajab, and so the 1st day of Sha'ban in the UK should begin on Tuesday the 6th of September.

On Monday, September 5th, sighting tried, and more than 5 people saw Hilal with eye (no aids). The moon was high enough in the sky that the older folks remarked it was a second day moon.

Jim Stamm (MCW member) from Tucson, Arizona: Seen
I picked up the crescent with my C-8 (55x) at 6:39 local time (MST). It was all but washed out by the haze. Even though I knew exactly where to look (due to the clouds), I never saw the Moon with the naked eye, and remained watching it until it set.

Gary Peterson (MCW member) from Tempe Arizona: Seen
I was able to see the young moon tonight at 7:12 MST with binoculars from Tempe, AZ. It set 40 minutes after the sun so I checked where the sun was at 6:32 and looked to the left of that spot. I could not see it with the naked eye.

After praying Maghrib, approximately 20 minuets after sunset the moon was sighted first by binoculars and then by eye briefly. The moon was visible for up to 20 minutes before setting. All but three of the group saw it either by eye or with binoculars. I photographed it and will have the image available Tuesday evening.
