The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on June 5, 2016 (Sunday) at 3:00 UT. On June 5, there is a possibility of moonsighting in Americas, and easy visibility in Hawaii and Polynesian Islands. On June 6, the moon can be easily seen in the whole world (See visibility curves).

The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent was on June 5, 2016 from Saudi Arabia (Official Announcement). No other details were provided by the Saudi authorities. (Moonsighting.com Comment: In Makkah, the moon age was 13 hours and it remained above horizon for 22 minutes. This may be possible with telescope, but not with naked eye. Sorry for this late comment. We were too busy adding information pouring in from other countries round the clock.)

  • Canada:

    1. Not Seen but Ramadan begins: MCW member Mr HiMY SYeD from St. John's, Newfoundland reported: This moonsighting report is from the eastern-most point in North America. I am travelling across Canada during Ramadan 2016 and blogging daily reports on my website: http://30Masjids.ca. I arrived tonight atop Signal HIll on the east side of St. John's literally as the Sun was setting below the horizon in the West. Sunset in St. John's tonight was at 8:56 p.m. Newfoundland Time ( 1 and 1/2 hour ahead of Eastern Time Zone). I searched for the New Moon from Signal Hill. The sky was clear, with very few clouds. Fog however another story. I searched until Fog rolled over and obscured any reasonable sighting of the potential for a new moon. I did not observe the new crescent moon tonight. Therefore, this is a Negative mooonsighting report from Signal Hill, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada for Sunday Evening, June 5, 2016.

However, both the Muslim Students' Association of Memorial University, and the Muslim Association of Newfoundland and Labrador are beginning Ramadan on Monday June 6 2016, the first full day of Fasting in Ramadan 2016, with Taraweeh starting tonight.

  • Ghana:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Baba Abdulai from Tamale reported: Date of sighting effort; Sunday June 5, 2016. The crescent was NOT seen in this location. Sighting effort was made around 18:00 and a short while after. I also tried to sight the crescent after Magrib prayers, around 18:50 but the sky was still cloudy. The cloudiness of the sky was probably as a result of rainfall at nearby areas. With about 15+ hours after conjunction (local time Tamale) I actually did not expect to see the crescent. And Allaah (SWT) Knows Best. Sighting location; Sagnerigu, Tamale.

    2. Seen on June 5: A belated sighting report on July 12, 2016 was submitted by the same MCW member Mr Baba Abdulai who is very experienced observer and has good knolwedge of science of moonsighting. Here is what he wrote:
Now I have new evidence as follows:

On Monday July 4, 2016 a friend of mine from Yendi informed me that he too had received positive sighting reports late in the evening of three people (including a fourth person who was disqualified for being a minor). Yesterday July 7, I again received a report of one other person who had sighted the crescent in Binduri District of the Upper East Region of Ghana. This man too called other people to come and witness the crescent with him; but when they came they could no longer see it.

In order to confirm the authenticity of the sighting reports, I persistently tried my best until I got contact numbers of most of the people who were said to have sighted the crescent. Below is a brief explanation of what they told me when I called them. .

      Mr. Abu-Siraj
Location: (Chanshegu, very close to Tamale township – Zujung Cemetery) Contacted on July 8, 2016. He saw the crescent after Magrib Prayer in a small clear space amidst the clouds in the western horizon; (Magrib was around 18:25 local time). Moonset for that day in Tamale was around 18:55, sunset was 18:21. This fact in addition to the responses of Mr. Abu-Siraj to my questions make me believe he actually saw the crescent.

      Mr. Mohammed
Location: (Binduri District, Upper East Region) Contacted on July 9, 2016. He was in his garden while looking out for the crescent, because they had already been informed by their Imam to look out for the crescent that Sunday June 5. When he saw the crescent he called out to nearby people to come and witness the crescent with him, but before they got there, it was covered in clouds. He then left the garden heading towards home when all of a sudden the sky cleared up a little bit once again, revealing the crescent to him a second time. This time round there were only two young boys around (about 13 years and 15 years of age). These boys were non-Muslims; but Mr. Mohammed called them and explained to them how important it is for Muslims to sight the moon and to have witnesses to confirm the sighting. He then pointed out the moon to them. Only the younger boy saw the moon but the older boy did not see it.

      Mr. Hassan
Location: (Gukpegu, a village near Yendi) Contacted on July 9, 2016. His nephew (a young boy) saw the moon and said to him “uncle look at the moon: just look between the electricity cables, and you should see it”. When Mr. Hassan looked in between the cables he actually saw the crescent. Mr. Hassan and his nephew too saw the moon immediately after Magrib Prayer. His description of the moon and the whole sighting incident was by far the most convincing to me. Size of moon, altitude, shape of moon, time of sighting (everything was right, to the best of my knowledge). He also confirmed that another man in their community also saw the moon while standing in the compound of his house. This man called his wife to come and witness the moon and his wife actually saw it too.

With the little knowledge I have about moonsighting, I am more than convinced that all these people had actually sighted the crescent. Personally, I actually started my fasting on June 7 after the crescent was sighted almost by everybody on June 6. Based on what I learnt from moonsighting.com I was convinced that Ghana had very little chance of sighting the crescent on June 5. Note from Moonsighting.com: Moonsighting.com is convinced that it was not impossible to see this crescent by naked eye as is evident from Visibility Curves above

Mr Baba Abdulai further said, "I have therefore decided to send you this email, humbly requesting that you post a belated positive sighting report on my behalf for June 5 2016 in order that it may serve as reference and possible guidance for authentication of future sightings. As a matter of fact, I wish you would please post the whole of my email as additional comments to my sighting report so that all interested Muslims can read it for themselves. Thank you very much and may Allaah (SWT) Guide us all. Aamiiin !!!

(Lattitude: 40.84 degree N, Longitude: 73.86° W). I arrived at a place near Castle Hill (sunset: 8:25 pm EDT) and easily could trace the crescent in a few minutes ( around 8.40 PM EDT). The moon had 5.3% illumination and angle of elevation was 15 degree above horizon . The sky was clear with few specks of cloud visible . The temperature was 81 F, dew point 64 F, relative humidity 57%, and pressure 30 inch and visibility was 10 mi. As per Islamic rule we have completed the month of Sha'aban on 6th June 2016 and started the month of Ramadan .

    2. Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Monday, June 06, 2016), the moon was sighted in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37° 15' 40" N, Lng: 80° 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters). Using a pair of binoculars (7X50), I searched for the moon during the day; it did not take too long that at around 2:20 pm EDT, I sighted the crescent in the clearings passing overhead. Thin clouds followed by heavy clouds hampered further observations. From the thickness of the crescent and ease of detection, perhaps earlier sighting and even naked eye sighting were possible. At 2:15 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 77.4 F, 60.8 F, 57%, and 29.90 in, respectively.

Overcast condition persisted till sunset. I arrived at my sighting location around sunset (sunset: 8:39 pm); breaks started to appear in the clouds, creating a mostly clear western horizon. I waited so long for the moon to appear. The horns were at 1:30 and 6:30 O'clock (1:30;4:00;6:30). I ended the session at 9:25 pm (moonset: 10:12 pm). At 8:55 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 71.6 F, 58.8 F, 64%, and 29.84 in, respectively.
