On right is the Photo of Urjoonal Qadeem like phase of waning moon taken today, Thursday, 28th of Ramadhaan 1441 (21st May 2020) from Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli (India) by Br. Mohamed Hussain. Lat: 08�42'51"N :& Long: 77�44'26"E; Time: 05:10 am IST. The illumination was 2.9 %; the Altitude was at about 3� and horns were at 6 & 9 positions. On Thursday, May 21st 2020 morning the sky was covered by cloud. However, alhamdulillah the old crescent (27.87 days, alt of 12�) of Ramadhan 1441 AH was successfully sighted from Assalaam Observatory, Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo Surakarta Central Java Indonesia. New Crescent Moon of Shawwal 1441:

The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on May 22, 2020 (Friday) at 17:38 UT. On that day, the moon can not be seen any where in the world. On May 23, it may be seen in Africa and Canada with difficulty, and in USA and South America easily. On May 24, the moon can be seen in almost the whole world (See visibility curves).


Those who claim to see the moon on May 22, had most likely seen the crescent of Venus. See the picture below with Abha Saudi Arabia.

  • Afghanistan:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Engr M Ibrahim Mayar from Kabul reported: Today, Sat.May 23, 2020 ,after sunset at 7:10 Oclock pm local time ; I attempted to see Seawall new moon. Unfortunately, Kabul city western horizon was havely cloudy. Thus, Shawall new moon could not be sighted.

  • Australia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Shabbir Ahmed, President of Qubaa association of Western Sydney, NSW reported: Today (Saturday) 23rd of May 2020, the Hilaal of Shawwaal 1441 has NOT been sighted anywhere in Australia. Therefore, the National Hilaal Committee members of Australia have declared that the month of Shawwaal 1441 will begin from Monday, 25th of May 2020.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Moussa Khalife from Sydney, NSW reported: Today is Saturday 23rd of May 2020. The moon has not been sighted in Sydney Australia so tomorrow Sunday is the last day of ramadan 1441H.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Imam Abul Qasim Rizvi, Imam Juma Melbourne reported: On May 23, the moon has not been sighted anywhere in Australia, therefore tomorrow, Sunday 24th May will be the 30th of Ramadhan Ul Mubarak inshallah Monday 25th May will be the Eid Ul Fitr 1441 AH

    4. Not Seen: MCW member Abbas Aly, from Triforce reported: As expected there was no sighting of Moon in Sydney today. We will complete 30 days of Ramadhan and have Eid on Monday 25th May 2020

  • Barbados:


    1. Seen: MCW member Mohammed Patel from Bridgetown reported: On Saturday, May 23, 2020, the crescent was SEEN. Orientation 4 O'clock to 7 O'clock. Therefore we have 29 days of Ramadan. Eid ul Fitr will be on Sunday 24th May, 2020.

  • Brunei:

Announced based on calculation: MCW member Dr Mohammed Hussain Ahmad, Deputy Rector Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali Negara Brunei Darussalam reported: By the command of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Shariah High Court Judge, Yang Arif Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohd Tashim made the announcement on Radio Television Brunei that Brunei Darussalam will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Sunday, May 24, 2020.

  • Canada:


    1. Seen: MCW member Muneeb Siddqui from Milton, Ontario reported: I and my brother went out to look for the moon after sunset in Milton. But we could not see it due to clouds being present in the horizon. However, the Hilal Committee of Toronto has confirmed the sighting of the moon within the region. Therefore, Shawwal 1441 AH will begin from Sunday, 24th of May, 2020.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member HiMY SYeD from Vancouver, British Columbia reported: This is a negative moonsighting report from Brampton, Ontario, Canada on this Saturday evening, May 23 2020. I searched for the new crescent moon of Shawwal 1441 tonight. There was haze and partial cloud cover above the horizon. lanet Venus was easily seen through the clouds. Very bright tonight. I spent at least 10 minutes searching, but did not see the crescent.

    3. Seen: MCW member Shakeel Anwar from Mississauga Ontaio reported: I sighted the hilal in Mississauga, Canada on May 23rd at 9:31pm. The sky was partly cloudy below Venus and Mercury however during a break in the clouds, the hilal appeared Alhamdullilah. The crescent horns were in the 1 to 7 o'clock position. I took a picture and have attached it as evidence of the sighting.

  • Chile:


    1. Seen: MCW member Muhammad Sohail from Iquique reported: In city of Iquique Chile the new moon is sighted on 23/04/2020. The sky was quite clear.

  • Egypt:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from Cairo reported: On Saturday, May 23rd, 2020. Crescent Moon was NOT seen. I observed tonight's sunset with a few of my friends from Giza (30.00�N, 31.2�E) Sat. May 23rd, 2020. Apparent sunset was at 18:47. For a whole fifteen minutes prior to apparent sunset, the Sun was too bright to look at. Visibility was superb. The Pressure, Temperature and reative humidity were 1016.3mb, 23.0�C, and 38.0% respectively. However, the crescent moon was too faint to be seen. Only 0.840207% of the Moon's surface was illuminated. The Moon was 394234.9368 Km away. The Crescent width was only 15.281 arcseconds. The crescent was 1.299493 magnitudes/arcsec� below the threshold of visibilty. Sure enough, we could see nothing, not even with binoculars, except Venus of course. At least we enjoyed seeing Venus.

  • Fiji Islands:


    1. Seen: Saiyad Hussain, the General Secretary of Fiji Muslim League has announced: The moon has been sighted on May 23. Eid is on Sunday, May 24, 2020.

  • Gambia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mahmood Sambou Darboe from Brikama reported: I have just read that there is local sighting of Moon in The Gambia on Friday, May 22. This is not accurate. The situation is that The Supreme Islamic Council of The Gambia announced that they received reports of sighting in Senegal, Niger and Mali based on that they declared May 23 as Eidul Fitr. There has been no sighting reported anywhere in the Gambia.

  • Ghana:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Malik Salifu Shaban from Garu Bawku reported: The crescent for shawal 1441 2020 has not been sighted here in Garu in the upper east region of Ghana today Saturday 23rd May 2020 even though the whether was clear. I started looking for the moon at 6:10pm local time and continued after magrib prayer to 7:40pm here. I called most of my friends acrossed the country including those who claimed sighting it yesterday but no news of new moon. The Ghana government had already announced Sunday 24th May as eidul fitr day.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Baba Abdulai from Tamale, Ghana reported: We heard a radio announcement (Zaa Radio) around 9 pm that the Crescent for the month of Shawwal was sighted in a suburb of Tamale called Kpalsi. The said sighter is named Afa Baba Kutubi and he had other witnesses. I earlier tried to sight the Crescent at Tampei-Kukuo, near Bi-Water but without success. I also contacted many towns without success.

  • Guyana:


    1. Seen: Mr Mansoor Baksh from Guyana reported: The moon was sighted in Guyana this evening (Saturday, May 23, 2020) by numerous persons - Just to name 3:
      Azeem Mohamed - Pomona, Essequibo Coast, Guyana
      Sister Ameera Aziz - Canal No. 2, West Bank Demerara
      Maqsood Mansoor - Georgetown, Guyana
      Also, A group of five brothers sighted the moon this evening at Blairmont, West Bank Berbice. They are: Momin Ali Sugrim, Yasir Ali Sugrim, Ramzan Karim, Jaleel Karim and Zaheer Ally.

    2. Seen: MCW member Dr Muhammad Hafiz from Rose Hall Town, Berbice reported: My brother Muraad Hafiz reported that the Hilaal was sighted after sunset at Rose Hall Town Masjid on Saturday, 23rd May, 2020. Hence, Guyana will celebrate Eid Ul Fitir on Sunday, 24th May, 2020.

  • India:


    1. 30 days completed: MCW member Rasheed Usman, Kozhikode, Kerala reported: All the Qazis in the State of Kerala and the Hilal Committee of Kerala declared Eidul Fitr on Sunday 24th May 2020 as there was no sighting of the Crescent on Friday evening. This is by counting Saturday 23rd May, as Ramadan 30 in the State"

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Naeem Surajwala from BHARUCH, GUJARAT, INDIA reported: Today, May 23, I personaly tried to see new crescent moon of Shawaal 1441. It was not Seen at BHARUCH, GUJARAT, INDIA Sunaday 24th may will be the 30th of Ramazan ul.mubarak and Inshallah Monday 25th May will be the Eid ul Fitr 1441 AH.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member SYED THANVEER PEERAN from COIMBATORE City, TAMIL NADU State reported: On Saturday 23rd May 2020, sky was clear. A GROUP of 5 people from one family tried to see the moon from 18:50 Hrs - 19:10 Hrs INDIAN STANDARD TIME (GMT +5:30).

    4. Not Seen: MCW member Yusuf Idara from New Delhi reported: Today 23- May -2020 = 29- Ramazan -1441 Hijri, I & My Family tried to see the moon at my home from 07:10 pm to 07:30 pm. The moon was Not sighted the horizon was too Cloudy.

Not Seen: MCW member Md Ohidullah from Birbhum, West Bengal reported: Today (Saturday) 23rd of May 2020, The Crescent moon of Shawwal 1441AH has not been sighted in Birbhum of West Bengal and any other State of India. Also, The Central Hilaal Committee of India, Imam of Delhi Jama Mosjid, Nakhoda Mosjid Rooyat-e-Hilal committee Kolkata, and Bengal Imam Association have declared that tomorrow, Sunday 24th May will be the 30th of Ramadhan. Therefore, Monday 25th May will be Eid Ul Fitr 1441 AH

  • Kenya:

Not Seen but Seen elsewhere in the country: MCW member Mahmood Essa from Mombasa reported: I tried to look for the new crescent today here in Mombasa, Kenya, but could not see it although weather condition was favourable. However, there have been confirmed reports of sighting elsewhere , so it has been announced that tomorrow , Sunday 24/05/2020 is the first day of Shawwal 1441, Alhamdullilah.

    2. Seen: MCW member Ali Mohamed from Mombasa reported: Today, 23rd May 2020 = 29th Ramadhan 1441, I personaly and my Cousin Brother tried to see new crescent moon of Shawaal 1441 at Mombasa City but we couldn't seen. However, Chief Kadhi of Kenya announced that "The Kadhi of Lamu County has reported the Moon has been sighted at Lamu County" So tomorrow Sunday will be 1st of Shawwal InshaAllah.

  • Lebanon:


    1. NOT Seen: Mr Hadi Jaafar from Beirut reported: I tried to sight the crescent of Shawwal this evening, May 23, 2020, from Beirut, Lebanon with no vain. I arrived at the sight at around 7:38 PM, local time. The western horizon was cloudy, but Venus, and later Mercury, were visible with the naked eye right after sunset. I tried to locate the moon with my 7*5 binoculars behind some clear patches with no success. I left the site at 8:05 local time.

  • Kuwait:


    1. Seen: Mr Hamad A. Mahdi from Kuwait reported: 1. Kuwaiti Astornomer Mr Falah Al-Shawaf at Kuwait Gulf Sea opposite to Kuwait national Assembly reported that two people out of 6 have sightseeing the new crescent.
      2. Reported at Al-Mutla desert North Kuwait that 6 out of nine people have sightseeing the new crescent, names as recevied: Mr. Ahmad Abul, Mr. Abdullah Nabeel, Mr. Salman Alshemali, Mr. Sayed Saleh Al-Shamma', Mr. Yousef Altahoo and Mr. Ali Abul.
      3. Reported at Al-Salmi Desert (West of Kuwait) two person, Mr. Sayed Hussain Taher Al-Mosawy and Mr. Mohammad Hussain Al-Mosawy have sighted moon with naked eye.

  • Maldives:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Asif Moosa Ibrahim from Kudahuvadhoo reported: On Saturday 23rd May 2020, 30th Ramadan 1441, Moon was not seen in Kudahuvadhoo, Maldives. But Tomorrow (24th may) is 1st of Shawwaal In Maldives because Today is 30th Ramadan.

  • Moldova:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Hasan Basri from Chisinau reported: On May 23, with my family tried to sight the moon in Durlesti town in Chisinau, Moldova. The sky was clear and could not succeed to see the moon.

  • Morocco:


    1. Seen: MCW member Ehsan H. Hajar from Casablanca reported: On May 23, I saw Hilal of Shawwal using my binoculars around 20.00 UTC from my location in Casablanca, Morocco. The sky was almost clear but with high humidity at the western horizon. The horns were around 2 to 7. I caught the Hilal minutes before being obscured by the dense red humidity. It wasn�t few minute later that Habous ministry confirmed sighting & declared Sunday May 24 Being first day of Shawwal.

  • Mozambique:


    1. Seen: Mr Adnan Munaf from Mozambique reported: Alhamdulilah moon is sighted in Mozambique on Saturday, May 23. Tomorrow 24th May 2020, Sunday will be Eid.

  • New Zealand:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Abid Jafery from Auckland reported: There has been NO confirmed sightings from anywhere in NZ and Fiji on Saturday, 23 May 2020 (29 Ramadhan) Hence Monday 25 May 2020 will be Eid ul Fitr, 1st Shawwal 1441 Hijri InshAllah and 24 May 2020 will be 30 Ramadhan 1441.

  • Nigeria:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Sheik A.A. Ishola from Ikorodu, Lagos reported: I and my children tried to look for Shawwal crescent area of IKORODU starting from 7:03-7:44 pm and the crescent was not seen due to partial cloud at the western horizon today 23-05 -2020.

  • Oman:


    1. Seen: MCW member Sulaiman Al Salmi from Muscat reported: The moonsighting committee in Oman has confirmed sighting Shawwal Hilal. On this regards, tomorrow Sunday 24/5/2020 is the 1st of Shawwal.

  • Pakistan:


    1. Seen: Mr Shafqat Qamar from Rawalpindi reported: Govt Body Ruyat e Hilal Committee announced that moon is sighted in Pakistan. 24 May is Eid ul Fitr.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Captain Tahir Gul Hasan from Lahore reported: On May 23, from sunset 18:57 Local Time onward until 19:15, I tried very hard with binoculers to sight the crescent, which this time was at almost the apogee. Not only were planets Mercury and Venus invisible, the crescent too remained so. The moon set at 19:36, so it was no use observing it until so late. The azimuth and altitudes I scanned were: 290 degrees, and from the horizon upwards to 15 degrees. The sky was not perfectly clear, and due to the recent partial unlocking of COVID-19 restrictions, the pollution due to vehicular traffic played its part in creating a dusty horizon. Hence, the SHAWWAAL 1441 crescent was NOT SIGHTED.

  • Saudi Arabia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Ayyub Patel from Abha reported: I tried to sight from Abha but I report no sighitng for crescent moon. However, I did see venus and its shape was a tiny crescent. Click on the photo on the right to see full size.

  • South Africa:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Tehseen Raza Hamdani from Rustenburg reported: On May 23, in Rustenburg, and major parts of South Africa, the crescent was not seen tonight. The Sunni Ulama Council have issued a united desicion that 30 days of Ramadan will be completed and Eid will be commemorated on Monday, 25th May 2020.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Rashid Motala from Durban reported: On the evening of Saturday 23 May 2020, the Hilaal was NOT sighted in South Africa. Therefore Shawwal 1441 will commence on Monday, 25 May 2020 in South Africa.

  • Sri Lanka:


    1. Seen in Kathankudy and Madawachi cities : MCW member Nular Bary from Colombo reported: Today 29th of Ramadan 1441H (23/05/2020) cloudy evening, I could not sight the New Moon of Shawwal immediately after Mahrib in Colombo. Our SunSet was at 6:21Pm and Moonset was at 6:58pm today. Some positive sightings were reported from Kinnia N/E of Sri Lanka, Kathankudy and Madawachi cities to our Hillal committee. Hence The Colombo Grand Mosque Hilal committee announced Eid du Fitur to be on Sunday 24th May 2020.

    2. Seen: MCW member Suhail Patel from Colombo reported: The CRESCENT for the month of Shawwal has been sighted in Sri Lanka on May 23, 2020. Month of of Ramadhaan will complete with 29 days. First day of Shawwal will be 24th May 2020 (Sunday).

  • Tanzania:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Hamza Rijal from Tiny Island of Zanzibar reported: In the tiny Island of Zanzibar, Tanzania the Hilaal of Shawwal has not been sighted anywhere on Saturday, June 23, 2020. However, Mufty office officially announced that 24th May 2020 is 1st Shawaal 1441AH.

  • Trinidad and Tobago:


    1. Seen: MCW member Umar Abdullah from Bon Accord, Tobago reported: Today, Saturday, 23th May 2020, after sunset we looked for the new moon of Shawwaal 1414 AH. The moon was SIGHTED. Therefore the month of Ramadhan have completed 29 days. Hence the 1st night of Shawwaal would be the night of Saturday 23th May 2020 and the first day of Shawwaal would be Sunday 24th May 2020. Location: lat: 10 35 long: 61 21; Time of Sunset: 18:23; Time of the first appearance of the crescent: 18:33; Pressure: 1015 mb; Temperature: 25 �C; Relative humidity: 84%.

  • Ukraine:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Lenur Chaush from Kiev reported: On May 23, I and Mr. Abu Zakariya Klimenkov tried to sight the moon in Kiev Region, but not seen. Also our brother Mansur together with observatory experts tried to sight the moon in Mayaki Observatory Center in south of Ukraine. The sky was cloudy and they also could not succeed to see the moon. However, referring to the credible reports from some other countries we took a decision to start Shawwal tomorrow on 24.05.2020.

  • UK:


    1. Not Seen: MCW Shezad Ishfaq from, Sheffield, Yorkshire reported: No sighting confirmed of the new crescent on 23/5/2020 from me in sheffield UK. Viewed the area site for over one hour after sunset.

  • USA:


    1. Seen: Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announced: The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that Sunday, May 24th, 2020 will be the first day of the month of Shawwal, 1441 A.H. for the entire region of North America.
      This determination is based on the fact that there were verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Saturday, May 23rd, 2020 in Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte, North Carolina, and Richmond, Virginia.

    2. Seen: Mr Muhammad Azimi from Fishers INDIANA reported: Today, May 23, I saw the moon easily around 9:30 pm from my house window in Fishers INDIANA. The clock wise it was 2 to 8 and right now it disappears. It was very very thin.

    3. Seen: MCW member Mohamedraza H.Janmohamed from Sanford FL reported: The Moonsighting Sub-committee wishes to inform the community that the new crescent for Mahe Shawwal 1441 AH was sighted in many cities in the USA on Saturday, May 23, 2020. Therefore, the 1st Day of Mahe Shawwal [EID-UL-FITR], 1441 AH is established as SUNDAY, MAY 24TH, 2020.

    4. Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Saturday, May 23, 2020), the crescent moon was sighted in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37� 15' 40" N, Lng: 80� 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters). I arrived at my sighting location at 7:41 pm EDT (sunset: 8:31 pm; apparent sunset: 8:20 pm). The western horizon was mostly clear and very hazy. Using a pair of binoculars (7X50), I started scanning the horizon. I spotted Venus at 8:12 pm with the pair of binoculars; later, it was clearly visible with naked eye at 8:36 pm. The first binocular sighting of the crescent moon was at about 8:38 pm. The crescent was thin and was visible with the naked eye at 8:42 pm. The horns were approximately at 2:30 and 6:30 O'clock (2:30;4:30;6:30). A friend of mine was also able to see the crescent, using a pair of (10X50) binoculars and then with naked eye. The first sighting of Mercury was at 8:42 pm. Later it was clearly visible with naked eye. I changed my location and stayed at the new site till moon set at 9:24 pm (moonset: 9:35 pm.

    5. Seen: MCW member Gulamabbas A. Khakoo from Anaheim, CA reported: On May 23, I sighted the crescent moon around 8:15pm for the month of Shawwal here in Anaheim, CA. USA. The horn orientation was 1 to 7.

    6. Seen: Mr Ben Jon from Palo Alto, CA reported: On May 23, in Palo Alto, CA, I and one of my colleagues(haudi) were actively searching for the new moon of shawwal and then one of our mutual friends, Ehsan called and he said he just sighted the moon, I verified the location which was slightly below planet Venus to the left. That helped me to locate the moon, which was visible with the naked eye just below the first strip of the clouds.

  • Zambia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Moulana Imtiyaz Misbahi, Imam Of Masjid Noor-e-Mohammedi from Lusaka reported: Today is Saturday 23rd of May 2020. The moon has not been sighted in LUSAKA ZAMBIA so tomorrow Sunday is the last day of Ramadan 1441 H.
