Below is the old Crescent Moon (End of Zul-Hijja 1436 AH), October 11, 2015 (not the new moon to start Muharram), (Photo on the right is provided by MCW member Mr AR Sugeng Riyadi from Assalaam Observatory, Surakarta Central Java): This is decreasing moon that was sighted in Indnesia after Fajr on Sunday, 11 October 2015. Click on the photo to see full size.

The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on October 13, 2015 (Tuesday) at 0:05 UT. On October 13, the moon may be visible in South America, Central America, and Polynesian Islands. On October 14, it will be visible ALL Over the world. (See visibility curves).

The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent was on October 14, 2015 from Sydney, Australia.

October 13, 2015 (Tuesday):

  • Australia:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Shabbir Ahmed, The president of Al- Tadhkeer Society, Sydney, NSW reported: On Tuesday, October 13, the Hilaal of Muharram has not been sighted anywhere in Australia. Therefore, the month of Muharram will commence from Thursday 15th of October 2015. THE DAY OF AASHOORA' WILL BE ON SATURDAY 24th OCTOBER 2015.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Engr Manzoor A Mian from Melbourne, VIC reported: Just to inform despite clear weather in Melbourne crescent is not sighted in Melbourne as well as all over Australia on 13/10/15 Tuesday. The 1st day of Muharram in Australia will be InshaAllah on Thursday the 15th of October, 2015.

  • Barbados:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Mohammed Patel from Jama Masjid, Bridgetown reported: Crescent NOT SEEN on Tuesday 13th October, therefore we had 30 days of Dhul Hijjah. Crescent was seen clearly on Wednesday 14th October. 1st of Muharram was therefore Thursday 15th October, 2015.

  • Chile:

    1. Seen: TomMarAlem1987 reported a web site for Muslims in Chile [], by a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Musulmanes en Chile that 1st Muharram was on October 14, Wednesday.

  • Ghana:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Malik Salifu Shaban from Garu , Upper East Region of Ghana reported: The moon for the new year of the islamic calender has not been seen today, 13th October, 2015 though the sky was bright.

  • Kenya:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Ali Mohamed from Mombasa reported: Today 29th.of Zul- Hajj 1436H = 13th October 2015 I tried to see the crescent of Muharram 1437 Hijri after Maghrib Prayer at Mombasa but the crescent was not seen.

  • Libya:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Nuri Alfasi reported: I have to declare that today the 13 October we could not see the Helal crescent in Msallatah, Libya. However, The Ifta authority of Libya in the capital Tripoli made an official announcement that tomorrow Wednesday, 14 October 2015 is the first day the month of Muharram 1437 H.

  • Mauritius:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Nissar Ahmad Ramtoola from Port Louis reported: The new moon was NOT sighted on Tuesday 13 October 2015 in Mauritius even though Sky was clear. Hence Wednesday 14 October will be the 30th day Of Zil Hajj. 1st day of Muharram 1437 will be Thursday 15 October 2015.

  • Morocco:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Zakaria Guelzim from Rabat reported: The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs of Morocco announced that first of Muharram 1437 is on Thursday, October 15th, 2015. The announcement issued by the ministry said that they looked for the crescent of the month of Muharram 1437, after maghrib of Tuesday, and contacted all principals and representatives of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in the Kingdom, and units of the Royal Armed Forces contributing to the observation of the Crescent, all of them have stated there is no proof of it's vision. Accordingly, the month of dulhijja has completed thirty days, and the first day of Muharram 1437 is Thursday, October 15, 2015.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Khalid Chraibi from Casablanca reported: I am pleased to send you my best wishes on the occasion of the New Muslim Year. The Moroccan authorities have annonced on Tuesday evening that the new moon wasn't observed over the Moroccan territory, therefore the 1st muharram 1437 will be on Thursday, corresponding to 15 October 2015.

  • Nigeria:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Engr Zaid Ibrahim from Satellite Town, Lagos reported: The hilal of Muharram 1437 A.H. was not sighted by me in Satellite Town, Lagos, Nigeria on Tuesday 13th of October, 2015. I tried between 6:20 p.m. and 6:48 p.m.

  • Saudi Arabia:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Ishaq Zunaedi of Indonesia from Aziziyah, Makkah, Saudi Arabia reported: On Tuesday October 13, 2015 Hilal was NOT seen.

  • South Africa:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Rashid Motala from Durban reported: On the evening of Tuesday 13th October 2015, the Hilaal was NOT sighted in South Africa. Muharram 1437 will commence on Thursday, 15th October 2015 in South Africa.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Abdurrazak Ebrahim from Cape Town reported: At post astronomical sunset on 13 October 2015 / end of 29 Dhul Hijjah 1436 H, the moon was in its hidden phase and an extra day is added to the month of Dhul Hijjah (explanation statement by the Holy Prophet PBUH : ‘Do not fast unless you see the HILAAL, and do not give up fasting till you see the HILAAL, but if you cannot see it (ghumma alay’kum), then act on estimation (faq’diru’la’hu)’ {i.e. count Ramadan as 30 days (akmilul ‘idda’ta thalathina)}.’ - al’Bukhari 3.130 The 1st Muharrum 1437 H in Southern Africa shall correspond with 15th October 2015 (Thursday).

  • Sri Lanka:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Nular Bary from Colombo reported: Today 29th of Dul Hajj 1436 (13/10/15) it is a rainy evening in Colombo and almost all over the country. Even if the western sky was clear it would be very difficult naked eye sighting as the Sunset 5:58Pm and Moonset at 6:17Pm 20 minites after sunset at the age 12H 30M. The Colombo Grand Mosque Hillal Committee didn't receive any sighting report from any part of the Country, hence the committee declared to complete the month of Dul Haj with 30days and start the month of Muharram 1437 on Thursday 15th October 2015 "In Sha Allah".

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Suhail Patel from Colombo reported: Today 29th.of Zul- Hajj 1436H (13/10/2014) in Colombo. the Hilaal was not sighted in Sri Lanka. Muharram 1437 will commence from Thursday 15th October 2015 and Aashura will be on Saturday 24th October 2015.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Abdurrahman Razeen from Colombo reported: Today 13-10-2015 it was sighting day for the month of Muharram 1437 in Srilanka. I went to my sighting place Bambalapitiya Colombo-04. Though the lag is 21 minutes and the naked eye sighting is impossible. The sharia requirement is to make efforts. In this process. Sighting groups were arranged in it's appropiate places in our country. All the groups reported negative sighting. The C.G.M.H.C. Which was presided by Moulana Riyadh Baari decided to complete the month of Dhul-Hijjah and begin the month of Muharram 1437 on Thursday 15th October 2015.

  • Tanzania:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Hamza Rijal from Tiny Island of Zanzibar reported: On Tuesday, 13th October 2015, the Hilal of Muharram 1437 AH was not seen in tiny Island of Zanzibar, the condition was hazy. I have been in my common place to observe the Hilal from 1830 local time (1500 GMT) to 1850 (1550 GMT) I was not able to site the Crescent, therefore the 1st Muharam 1437 AH will be on Thursday 15 October 2015.

  • Trinidad and Tobago:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Umar Abdullah from Bon Accord, Tobago reported: The New Moon of Muharram was not sighted here in Trinidad and Tobago. Therefore the month of Dhul-Hijjah will carry 30 days. The 1st of Muharram will commence on Thursday 15th October 2015, In Shaa Allah.

  • USA:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Tuesday, October 13, 2015), the crescent moon was not sighted in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37° 15' 40" N, Lng: 80° 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters). I arrived at my sighting location (Blacksburg Middle School) just after sunset (sunset: 6:47 pm EDT). Using a pair of binoculars (10X50), I started looking for the crescent in the clearings of a mostly cloudy western horizon. I ended the session after moonset (moonset: 7:22 pm). At 6:55 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 62.6 F, 50.4 F, 64%, and 29.78 in, respectively.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Khalil Homafar from Houston TX reported: on Tuesday October 13, 2015 I was at the site from 6:55 pm to 7:40 pm. The condition of weather was good and sky was clear but the hilaal of Moharram was not sighted in Houston Texas.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Mohammed Yahya Shaikh from Anaheim CA reported: I tried to sight the hilal in Anaheim, CA, for the month of Muharram today (Oct 13, 2015) but was not successful. Optical aid did not help the cause either, probably due to thick layer of dark grey clouds in the lower horizon where the moon was likely to be seen. My efforts were between 18:20 PST to 18:45 PST.
