The Astronomical New Moon is on Wednesday January 1, 2014 at 11:14 UT. There is small possibility that the moon may be seen in North America on January 1, 2014. On Thursday, Jaunary 2, moon can be easily seen in the whole world, except with difficulty in Australia (See visibility curves).

      DATE OF SIGHTING EFFORT: Wednesday, January 01, 2014
      LOCATION OF SIGHTING: Not seen at Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37� 15' 40" N, Lng: 80� 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters)
      SKY CONDITIONS: Mostly clear with some clouds in the southwest
      TIME OF SIGHTING EFFORT: I arrived at my sighting location at 4:49 pm EST (sunset: 5:15 pm). Using a couple of binoculars (7X50 and 10X50), I started scanning the expected area. Venus was sighted by naked eye immediately after being sighted by a pair of binoculars at 4:59 pm. Eventually, I had to look for the crescent in a region covered by thin clouds. I continued searching for the crescent till moonset with no success (moonset: 5:56 pm).

      TIME OF SIGHTING EFFORT: I Saw moon with 20x80 binoculars at 18:34 and it was gone by 18:38. Did not see it by eye even though I tried hard

      REMARKS: Sunset 18:06: Moonset 18:49. It was absolutely seen by binos, but it was not much standing out from the surrounding sky brightness:

      SKY CONDITIONS: I used Venus first to locate the approximate location in the sky knowing that the moon would be very close to Venus that I could see easily after sunset).
      REMARKS: I then scanned the area of sky with 20x80 binocs until I spotted the faint crescent of the moon. It was about 15 mins later that the crescent became visible to the naked eye - but only just because of patchy light cloud.

      REMARKS: I went for sighting the crescent without looking for its location on any computer software and the sunset location was hidden by 10 degrees cloud above western horizon but with the help of Venus I could find the crescent by the binocular then with naked eyes but with difficulty due to bad weather.

      TIME OF SIGHTING EFFORT: I tried to observe the Hilaal after mahrrib salah at about 6:15PM till 7;PM even with my binocular I couldn't trace a thing. Sunset was at 6:06PM. & moonset was at 7:09PM.
