March 20, 2015 (Friday):

  • Saudi Arabia:

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr. Qamar Uddin from Madinah reported: I was visiting Madinah on Friday 20 March 2015 and decided to join a local group of observers who were fully equipped with binoculars, telescope and CCD camera mounted instruments. We did not see the crescent even though the western horizon was very clear. There was a solar eclipse a few hours earlier, but since the moon set was after sunset in Makkah, the month of Jumada Al-Thani 1436 will start from the next day (21 March 2015) in Saudi Arabia.

  • USA:

    1. Not Seen: Imam Mahdi Association of Marjaeya (I.M.A.M.) reported: The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announces that, Sunday, March 22, 2015, will be the first day of the month of Jumada al-Thani, 1436, for the entire region of North America.
This is based on the fact that there were no verified sightings of the crescent moon at sunset on Friday, March 20, in any region of North America. Thus, Saturday is the last day of Jumada al-Awwal.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr. Mirza Shahid Basravi from Irvine CA reported: Mirza Shahid Basravi, reported NOT SEEN for Friday, March 20, 2015 from Irvine, California, USA: The scenario for the sighting of the new crescent on March 20, 2015, was exceptionally important and would have been one of the younger sightings of the new crescent, with moon age being 16hr and 25min at sunset. At sunset in Southern California the altitude of the Moon was about 8.0 degrees and the elongation was about 8.6 degrees. For this reason, instead of trying to sight from my usual sighting place in Irvine Ca, I went to Mount Wilson Observatory, 5700 ft above sea level, just northeast of Los Angeles. Unfortunately I was not able to sight the new crescent due to heavy clouds in the western sky. Mr. Kazim Mamdani reported that he and his family made a dedicated effort in San Diego, Ca. But they also faced heavy clouds on the western horizon and were unable to sight the new crescent.
