The Astronomical New Moon is on March 11, 2013 (Monday) at 19:51 UT. On March 11, it can not be seen anywhere in the world. On Tuesday, March 12, 2013, it can be seen with difficulty in Middle East, Northern Africa, and Europe. However, it can be easily seen in North America, Central America and Northwestern araes of South America. In New Zealan and Australia, it can only be seen on March 13. (See visibility curves).

Sighting Reports

The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent by naked eye was on March 12, 2013 from Morocco, and by telescope from Kuwait.

Not Seen: Neria Haroeh (MCW member) from Bet Meir reported: I tried to see the new moon this evening (12.03.2013) from Bet Meir, on a mountain near Jerusalem which observe all the west horizon. It was impossible to see the moon due to very bad visibility conditions, and hard haze. It was even very hard to see the sun 15 min before sunset.

  • Kuwait:

    1. Seen w/telescope: Hussain Khushaish (MCW member) from Kuwait reported: In Kuwait, On Tuesday 12 Mar 2013, at Kabad desert, I saw the crescent only with GPS guided 8" telescope.Our local sunset was at 17:56, the crescent was first seen with telescope at 18:05. I could not see the crescent with view finder,or with 10* 50 binocular or with naked eyes.The weather was clear exept last 3 degrees were hazy that I could see Al Hamra Tower (414 meter hieght) 40 Km far away at Kuwait city but with difficulty. We were 5 persons and all of us saw the crescent.

Not Seen: Firdaus Mazlan (MCW member) from Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia reported: On Tuesday, 12 th March 2013 M equal to 29 th Rabi-al-Thani 1434 H, I with my friend (Mr. Mohammad Hasbarizal bin Hasan, Mr. Khairi bin Nahrawie and Mr. Nik Mohd Firdaus bin Nik Zainal Abidin) cannot see the new moon either with telescope or with naked eye at Baitul Hilal, Teluk Kemang, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia (02:26:43.0 N , 101:51:16.0 E). It because the horizon is very cloudy. So, tomorrow, 13 th March 2013 M (Wednesday) is still the 30 th Rabi-al-Thani 1434 H.

  • Nigeria:

    1. Not Seen: AbdulKareem Isa (MCW member) from AYA Mosque Area, Abuja reported: Effort to sight the new hilal was unsuccessful today 30th R.Thanni 1434 in AYA Mosque Area, Abuja Nigeria. Observation was made from 18:30 hrs local time till Magrib Prayers and after the salat with no naked visibility despite the reasonably clear weather/skies.

    2. Not Seen: Jinadu Yunusa (MCW member) from Kisi, Oyo State reported: We sighted for the new crescent today Tuesday, March 12, 2013, between 6:40pm-7:15pm. We could not see it with clear blue sky and saturated red horizon. Since today is 30th of Rabiu Akhir, and with no infomation regarding sighting of the new hilal across the country, tomorrow (Wednesday) should be 1st of Jumada Ula.

  • Pakistan:

    1. Not Seen: Rizwan Shah (MCW member) from Gujrat reported: Today 12 March 2013 (29 rabi ul thani) just after sunset we tried to see the moon but westren horizan was totally cloudy. It was officaly announced that 1st jammat ul awal will be on Thursday 14 March.

  • South Africa:

    1. Not Seen: Rashid Motala (MCW member) from Durban reported: On Tuesday 12th March 2013, the Hilaal was NOT sighted in South Africa. Jumad-al-Ula 1434 will commence from Thursday 14th March 2013.

  • UK:

    1. Not Seen in UK: But Seen in Morocco: Qamar Uddin (MCW member) from York reported: On Tuesday 12 March 2013 (29 Rabiul Thani 1434 AH) many people from the UK have attempted to sight the crescent moon (Hilal) of Jumada Al-Ula after sunset. None of the groups were able to sight the Hilal, as most places were totally cloudy.
      However, we have received a reliable sighting report (Muhaqaq-Ruyat-Basari) from the Morocco Awqaf Ministry by fax. Therefore, the Wifaq/Batley Ulama have decided that the month of Rabiul Thani 1434 AH will have 29-days and the month of Jumada Al-Ula 1434 AH will start from Wednesday 13 March 2013, Insha-Allah.

  • USA:

    1. Seen: Mohamedraza H.Janmohamed (MCW member) from Sanford FL reported: The Moon-sighting Sub-committee wishes to inform the community that the new crescent was sighted in Orlando on March 12, 2013. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13, 2013 is therefore established as the 1st Day of Mahe Jamadil Awwal, 1434 AH.

    2. Seen: Dr. Javad Torabinejad (MCW member) from Blacksburg VA reported: This evening (Tuesday, March 12, 2013), the crescent moon of Jumada I was sighted in Blacksburg, VA (Lat: 37� 15' 40" N, Lng: 80� 26' 56" W, and elevation: 646 meters). The western horizon was partly cloudy. I arrived at my sighting location before sunset; the apparent sunset was at 7:22 pm EDT (actual sunset: 7:26 pm). Using a pair of binoculars (7X50), I sighted the crescent at 7:24 pm. It took me 12 more minutes to see the moon with naked eye. The horns were at 3:30 and 8:30 O'clock (3:30;6:00;8:30). The comet PanSTARRS was also visible first by the use of the pair of binoculars at 7:54 pm and then by naked eye at 8:02 pm. I left the location at 8:30 pm (moonset: 8:37 pm). At 7:35 pm, the temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and pressure were 42.8 F, 33.8 F, 70%, and 29.96 in, respectively.

    3. Seen: Tasmin Ahmad (MCW member) from Lake Elsinore, CA reported: On Tuesday, March 12, 2013, I saw the thin sliver of the crescent moon easily in Lake Elsinore, California at 7:23pm. The sky was clear. I was able to see the moon and the comet PANNSTARRS until 7:53pm, when they set behind the mountains. The orientation of the crescent was from 4 O'clock to 8 O'clock on a dial of an imaginary clock in the sky. See photo on the right.

    1. Not Seen: Ayub Mahomed (MCW member) from Harare reported: On March 12, 2013, the moon was not sighted in Zimbabwe. 1st jamadul-ula will be on Thursday 14 March 2013.

  • Australia:

    1. Seen: Dr. Shabbir Ahmed (MCW member) Imam of Rooty Hill Mosque Sydney, NSW reported: On Wednesday, 13th March 2013, the Hilal of JAMADIYUL OULA 1434 has been sighted in Brisbane. Consequently, the Hilal Committee and Majlisul Ulama' of Australia have confirmed that the month of JAMADIYUL OULA will begin as of Thursday, 14th March 2013.

    2. Not Seen: but seen at other locations: Engr Manzoor A Mian (MCW member) from Melbourne, VIC reported: We were unable to sight crescent in Melbourne on 13/3/13 Wednesday evening as it was cloudy. However It was sighted in Brisbane . Therefore the first day of Jumadi ul Awwal in Australia is Thursday the 14th of March 2013.

  • India:

    1. Seen: M. Siddik Nadvi (MCW member) from Ahmedabad, Gujrat reported: Today Wednesday, March 13, 2013 = 30 Rabi us sani 1434, we tried to see the crescent of Jumada-al-Oola 1434 Hijri at our Institute JAMIA KANZUL ULOOM at 6.55 pm. The cresent was seen and an Official announcement by Gujrat Chand Commitee is that the crecent is seen and 14th March is 1st Jumada-al-Oola.

  • Indonesia:

    1. Seen: Ahmad I. Adjie (MCW member) from Bandung reported: I together with co-sighter Ridwan have SEEN the Moon today, Wednesday 13 March 2013. Location of sighting was just outside our house in the northern hills of Bandung. The Hilal was easily made out although there were some patches of clouds at the horizon. Both of us followed the moon until it disappeared behind thicker clouds and a few men from the masjid who passed us also could see the crescent on our directions.

  • Israel:

    1. Seen: Neria Haroeh (MCW member) from Tel Aviv reported: Today, Wednesday, 3/13/2013, I saw the new moon from Tel Aviv at 18:20.

  • Mauritius:

    1. Seen: Nissar Ahmad (MCW member) from Port Louis reported: Alhamdulillah tonight Wednesday 13 March 2013 new moon was easily sighted in several locations in Mauritius by members of Jummah Masjid Hilaal Committee, hence Thursday 14 March 2013 will be the 1st day of Jamaad Ul Awwal 1434.

  • Sri Lanka:

    1. Seen: Nular Bary (MCW member) from Colombo reported: Today 29th Rabi al Thani 1434H(13/03/2013), evening the sky was clear I was able to sight the new Moon of Jumada al Oola 1434H just after Maharib (6;22pm.); easy naked eye sighting. Some have sighted the Helal just before sunset too. Hence the Hilal Committee of Sri Lanka & the Colombo Grand Mosque announced in the locale media to start the month of Jumada-al-Oola on the 14th March Thursday 2013.
