The Astronomical New Moon is on September 16, 2012 (Sunday) at 2:11 UT. On Sunday, September 16, it can not be seen anywhere in the world, except part of South Africa, South America and Polynesian Islands. On Monday, September 17, 2012, it can be easily seen in New Zealand, Australia, South-East Asia, Africa and Americas (See visibility curves).

The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent was on September 17, 2012 from Mauritius.

Sunday, 16 September 2012:

  • Australia:

    1. Not Seen: Engr Manzoor A Mian (MCW member) from Melbourne, VIC reported: Melbourne was cloudy and rainy today 16/09/12 Sunday evening. We were unable to sight cresent in Melbourne. It was also not sighted anywhere in Australia. Therefore the first day of Dhul Qaida in Australia will be from Tuesday 18th September 2012 InshaAllah.

    2. Not Seen: Dr. Shabbir Ahmed (MCW member) Imam of Rooty Hill Mosque Sydney, NSW reported: On Sunday 16th September 2012, the Hilal of DHUL QA'DAH 1433 has not been sighted anywhere in Australia. Henceforth, the Hilal Committee and Majlisul Ulama' of Australia have declared that the month of DHUL QA'DAH 1433 will commence from Tuesday 18th September 2012.

  • Fiji Islands:

    1. Not Seen: M Shamim Ali (MCW member) from Samabula Suva reported: On September 16, new Moon for the month of Zill Qada was not seen anywhere in the Fiji Islands, therefore 1st Zill Qada 1433H began on Tuesday 18th September 2012.

  • Indonesia:

    1. Not Seen: AR Sugeng Riyadi (MCW member) from Surakarta, Java reported: On Sunday, 16th September 2012; the new Crescent of DHul Qi'dah 1433 AH was NOT SEEN from my location, at Assalaam Observatory-Surakarta - Central Java - Indonesia. It should also be noted that the old crescent of shawwal 1433 AH was seen on Saturday, September 15, 2012 after Fajr prayer from Juwiring Klaten Indonesia.

  • Japan:

    1. Announced based on Malaysian authorities: Dr. Salimur Rahman Khan Nadwi, Chairman, Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee-Japan reported:
      The Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee-Japan is pleased to announce that according to the Malaysian authorities the 1st of Zulqadah 1433 A. H. started on Monday, 17 September, 2012. There was no news for sighting of the Hilal (new moon) in Japan, therefore we are following the announcement of the Hilal (new moon) in Malaysia according to Fatwa of Ulama Kiram.

  • Pakistan:

    1. Not Seen (Cloudy): Rizwan Shah from Gujrat reported: On Sunday, September 16, the new crescent was not sighted by us because the sky was totally cloudy. I started to sight the moon from 6:10pm local time to 7:00 pm but I failed to find the moon.

  • Panama:

    1. Not Seen: Saleh Bhai Bhattay (MCW member) from Panama City reported: On Sunday 16th September 2012, the Hilal of DHUL QA'DAH 1433 has not been sighted in Pananma.

  • Saudi Arabia:

    1. Not Seen: Saleh M. Alsaab (MCW member) from Riyadh reported: For this month alhamdolillah, no positive reports came on Sunday, September 16 from anywhere. For your information, there is no web site to display the sighting information, the results are sent to the supreme court and anyone can know the result from there announcement only.

  • South Africa:

    1. Not Seen: Dr. Abdurrazak Ebrahim (MCW member) from Cape Town reported: The Dhul Qada Hilaal was not sighted by naked-eye this Sunday evening (end of 29th Shawaal / 16 September 2012) in Cape Town, or anywhere else in Southern Africa. Therefore Shawaal will be extended to a 30 day month. The official first day of Dhul Qada will correspond to Tuesday, 18 September 2012 in all southern Africa countries.

    2. Not Seen: Rashid Motala (MCW member) from Durban reported: On Sunday 16th September 2012, the Hilaal was not sighted in S. Africa. Shawwal will be 30 days and DHUL QA'DAH 1433 will commence from Tuesday 18th September 2012.

  • Sri Lanka:

    1. Not Seen (Cloudy): Nular Bary (MCW member) from Colombo reported: On Sunday 29th.of Shawwal 1433 (16/9/2012) in Colombo the western sky was cloudy and I couldn't see the New Moon of Dhul-Qi'dah. Inshaallah I'll try to observer tomorrow again. Anyway we will complete the month of Shawwal with 30days and start the month of Dhul-Qi'dah 1433 on Tuesday 18th.September 2012.

  • UK:

    1. Not Seen: Qamar Uddin (MCW member) from York reported: On Sunday, 16 September 2012 (29 Shawwal 1433 AH) many people from throughout UK have attempted to sight the crescent moon (Hilal) of Dhul Qa'dah after sunset. None of the groups were able to sight the Hilal, even though some places had clear sky conditions.
      We have not received any reliable sighting reports (Muhaqaq-Ruyat-Basari) from the east of UK/Morocco either.
      Therefore, the Wifaq/Batley Ulama have decided that the month of Shawwal 1433 AH will complete 30-days and the month of Dhul Qa'dah 1433 AH will start from Tuesday 18 September 2012, Insha-Allah.

  • USA:

    1. Not Seen (even by telescope): Jim Stamm (MCW member) from Tucson AZ reported: On September 16, I was NOT able to see the crescent, even through a telescope. Only slight haze, and a little darkening on the western horizon kept the sky from being perfect. The color through the eyepiece looked good, and I thought, �Just one more minute, may be I could see it, but No.
