New Crescent Moon of Ramadan 1439:

The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on May 15, 2018 (Tuesday) at 11:48 UT. On May 15, it is not easy to see it anywhere. On May 16, the moon can be seen easily every where except Japan and New Zealand (See visibility curves).


Saudi Official Announcement: We will complete 30 days of Sha'ban on May 16, 2018 (Wednesday), and will start Ramadan on the evening of Wednesday; 1st day of Ramadan is Thursday, May 17, 2018.

The earliest authentic new moon sighting that we received was from Fullerton, CA, seen by four Muslims using optical aids on May 15, 2018.

Not Seen: MCW member Dr Mohammed Hussain Ahmad, Deputy Rector Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali Negara Brunei Darussalam reported: Brunei will begin fasting on Thursday, May 17, 2018 as the Ramadan crescent was not sighted at all designated locations on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. By the command of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Shariah High Court Judge, Haji Johar bin Haji Mohammad announced on Radio Television Brunei that Ramadan will begin on May 17.

    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr S. Shahid from Mississauga, ONTARIO reported: A group of 9 members from our local Masjid (Meadowvale Islamic Centre) including our Imam attempted to sight the moon this evening between 8.30-8.55PM until moonset time.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr HiMY SYeD from Vancouver, British Columbia reported: On Tuesday evening May 15 2018, after praying Maghrib in Granville Street Musallah in Downtown, Vancouver, I decided to walk the length of the Cambie Bridge to search for the moon. It has been cloudless all evening. There is a slight haze above the horizon. I searched the sky for about 12 minutes, the length of time to walk the bridge. I did not see the moon.

  • Egypt:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from Cairo reported: On Tuesday, May 15, hre in Ma'adi, south Cairo (29.97�N, 31.25�E), Sunset was at 18:41. New moon was around 13:58 UTC + 2. Best time of observation was at 18:42:07. At that time, the Crescent width was 4.34" (arcseconds). Moonset was about 2 minutes after Sunset. I started my futile attempt, just for the record, at Sunset. By the time the Adhan was over the moon had already set.

  • Ghana:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Baba Abdulai from Tamale reported: Date of sighting effort, Tuesday May 15, 2018. Sighting location, Gambaga. The crescent was NOT sighted in this location. Time of sighting effort was between 18:05 to 18:22 and a little beyond. Sky condition was a little cloudy in the western horizon. With only about 6 and half hours after conjunction, I did not expect to see the crescent.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Malik Salifu Shaban from Garu Bawku reported: The hilaal for Ramadan 1439, 2018 has not been sighted here in Garu in the Upper East Region of Ghana today, Monday 15th May 2018 which is 29th day of Sha'ban. The sky was clear, sighting efforts were made starting from 18:20 local time but no sign of new moon from all neighbouring villages and towns around Garu and on live radio programme. I also called friends from Kumasi and Accra but no moon can be seen in Ghana today. The Chief Imam of Ghana announced earlier that Ramadan will begin Tomorrow 16th May 2018 but others wait to sight the moon or complete shaban 30 tommorrow and fast on Thursday the 17th of May 2018.

  • Guyana:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Muhammad Hafiz from Rose Hall Town, Berbice reported: The members of Rose Hall Town Masjid tried to observe the Hilaal today May 15, 2018 after sunset. No Hilaal was observed, hence the 1st day of fasting for Ramadan in Guyana will be on Thursday 17, 2018. I tried to observe the Hilaal in Queens, New York today May 15, 2018 after sunset. Due to clouds on the horizon and a rainstorm observation was made impossible.

  • India:


    1. Declared: Mr Rasheed Usman from Kerala, India reported: Ramadan 1 is declared as on Thursday by completing Sha'aban 30 as no sighting took place anywhere in the State.

  • Indonesia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr AR Sugeng Riyadi from Assalaam Observatory (The Modern Boarding School of Islam ASSALAAM, Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo, Central Java Indonesia) reported: The New (Waxing) Crescent of Ramadhan 1439 A.H was NOT SEEN on Tuesday, 15 May 2018. This event was attend by CASA members, Students of HMJ Ilmu Falak Walisongo Islamic State University Semarang, Students of Isy Karima, Head of HAAS, Team of Gara Syariah Sukoharjo, Surakarta, Boyolali, and Moslems from over Solo Raya.
      The Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in the Sidang Isbath decided that Ramadhan 1st, 1439 A.H starts on Thursday, May 17th, 2018.

  • Lebanon:

    1. Seen: Dr. Ahmad Salamah (a retiree scientists of Jet Propulsion Lab. in California) from Fullerton CA reported: On May 15, 2018 (Tuesday), I and three other persons saw the Hilal using binocular/telescope. It was a difficult sighting.

    2. Not Seen: Mr Mohammed Shaikh from Garland TX reported: The moon for the month of Ramadhan was not sighted in Garland, TX on May 15, 2018. Sighting attempts were made between 20:15 and 20:25 CT. Majority of DFW Metroplex is awaiting sighting reports from the west. Ramadhan Kareem to all.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Hamid Quraishi, Imam Islamic Center of Winona (ICW) MN reported: On May 15, 2018, in Winona, MN, USA, the crescent of Ramadan 1439, was not visible with naked eye due to scattered cloudy condition. Therefore ICW will complete the 30 days of Shaban and the first day of Ramadan will be on May 17, 2018. Ramadan Mubarak to everyone.

    4. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Mirza Shahid Basravi from Anaheim Hills CA reported: On Tuesday, May 15, 2018, I went to my favorite spot in Anaheim Hills, well before sunset, which was at 19:44.. I set up my tripod, camera, and chair. I was also armed with two binoculars. The sky conditions on the western horizon was perfect. I was at that spot till after moonset, 20:10. However, I could not see the new crescent.

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Abbas Aly from Annangrove NSW reported: The moon for the Holy month of Ramadhan has been sighted in Bathurst NSW. Syed Abul Qasim resident Sheikh of ISCQ has advised moon has been sighted in Brisbane. Thursday 17th May will be 1st of Ramadhan.

    2. Seen: MCW member Mr Moussa Khalife from Sydney, NSW reported: Today is Wednesday 16th of may 2018 , we have sighted the moon in sydney Australia at 5:38 pm.

    3. Seen: MCW member Dr Shabbir Ahmed, President of Qubaa association of Western Sydney, NSW reported: Today, the 16th of May 2018, the Hilaal of RAMADAAN UL MUBAARAK � 1439 has been sighted in Brisbane. Therefore the Moonsighting Committee of Australia has declared that the month of RAMADAAN UL MUBAARAK will commence from Thursday, 17th of May 2018.

  • Bangladesh:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Engr. Azizul Huq from Dhaka reported: I tried to see the Crescent moon personally after Magrib prayer from roof top but couldn�t reach home in time as was on traffic jam. Bangladesh Television announced that Ramadan moon was not visible anywhere in Bangladesh sky, and I thought the sky was clear. So Ramadan will be started from Friday, 18th May.

  • Barbados:


    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Mohammed Patel from Bridgetown reported: From Jama Masjid in Bridgetown, Barbados on Wednesday 16th May, 2018, the Crescent was SEEN at approximately 6:15 p.m. local time. Orientation 3 o'clock to 7 o'clock. Therefore we had 29 days of Sha'ban. Insha'Allah, the 1st of Ramadan will be on Thursday 17th May, 2018.

  • Canada:


    1. Seen: MCW member Mr HiMY SYeD from Vancouver, British Columbia reported: On Wednesday evening, May 16 2018, after praying Maghrib at Masjid Al Jamia Vancouver, I walked along the False Creek Seawall while searching for the new moon. The new crescent was easily sighted. The moon was quickly descending behind the city's skyline, but remained clearly viewable for many minutes.

Seen: MCW member Mr Beg Tamachi from Peterborough, Ontario reported: After many years of unsuccessful Hilaal Sighting attempts in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, Alhamdulillah, today Wednesday 16, 2018 by The Grace of The Almighty ALLAH my family and I were rewarded with the most beautiful sighting of the Hilaal of Ramadan 1439 (2018), right from the backyard of our humble home. The sighting was witnessed by my wife, my son and myself between 9 and 9:10 PM this evening!!

  • China:


    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Musa�Minhai from Linxia Gansu Province reported: On 16 May, we went to sight crecent at Linxia (35�36',103�13'),The moom set time is 19:47,the sun set time is 20:05(Beijing time),the altitude of crecent is -2�,so we did not see it by telescope. On 17 May, we have seen in by naked eye. altitude of crecent is 8.5�. the more muslim start to first day of Ramadam. (Moonsighting.com comment: This is exactly as visibility curve shows)

    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from Cairo reported: Yesterday, Wed 16th May, I couldn't make it to any of my usual observation points. I didn't manage to see the Hilal. It was probably obscured by surrounding buildings. Venus was very bright. However, my friend Mr. Mahmoud AbdelWahhab, observed the hilal and photographed it from Sheikh Zayed city (30.04�N, 30.97�E), west of the great Pyramid.

Seen: MCW member Mr Malik Salifu Shaban from Garu Bawku reported: The crescent for Ramadan 1439/2018 has been sighted in Garu in the Upper East Region of Ghana today Wednesday 16th May 2018 at 18:40 local time. I saw the moon alongside my friends at the ASWAJ mosque here in Garu. Ramadan starts tomorrow 17th May 2018 Inshaa Allah.

    2. Seen: MCW member Mr Baba Abdulai from Tamale reported: Date of sighting effort; Wednesday May 16, 2018. Sighting location, Gambaga. I sighted the crescent by myself in this location while standing behind the Municipal Agric. Office. It was around 18:45 soon after Magrib Prayers. Clouds kept shielding the crescent intermittently but I was lucky to get two witnesses (Mahamadu Saiid from Nabaandaan-yiri Telephone: 0551945296, and Issifu Ibrahim of Mooga-yiri). I also confirmed from my friend Inusah Musah and his sister Hibatu in Bawku who also saw the crescent over there. Other towns like Kumasi and Accra have also been confirmed to have seen the crescent. Ramadan Mubaarak.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Mohammed Mohsin Khan from Mumbai reported: Today Wednesday 16 May 2018 / 29 Shabaan 1439 in India. Here in Mumbai Sunset was at 07:06 p.m LT and Moonset was at 08:06 pm LT but Crescent has not been sighted in Mumbai and in most parts of India , Moon-Sighting Committee have officially announced at 08:20 p.m L.T that in India, Thursday 17 May 2018 will be 30th Shabaan 1439 and 1st Ramadaan 1439 will fall on Friday 18th May 2018.

Not Seen but seen by others: MCW member Mr AR Sugeng Riyadi from Rowasiya Observatory in Bendo Ketitang Juwiring Klaten Central Java reported: The New (Waxing) Crescent of Ramadhan 1439 AH was NOT SEEN on Wednesday, 16 May 2018 from Rowasiya Observatory at Bendo Ketitang Juwiring Klaten and Assalaam Observatory, The Modern Boarding School of Islam ASSALAAM, Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo, Central Java Indonesia. The sky was totally cloudy.
      The new crescent was sighted by Mr. Rasywan from IAIN Bone, mr. Raja Muda from STIBA Makassar and mr. Hendro Setyanto from Pondok Bali Subang West Java.

    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Khalid Chraibi from Casablanca reported: I am pleased to inform you that the Moroccan authorities have just announced that the new moon was observed this wednesday evening. Therefore, Ramadan is to begin in Morocco tomorrow Thursday, May 17.

    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Wajid Hussain from Palmerston North reported: On May 16, Wednesday, the moon has been sighted in New Zealand. Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand has announced that Thursday 17 May 2018 will be the first day of Ramadan.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Abid Jafery from Auckland reported: The new crescent of Ramadhan 1439 Hijri was not sighted today on Wednesday 17th May 2018 from any regions of New Zealand, it has been cloudy weather with no clear sky at Sunset and no sighting reported from our sources of NZ and Fiji, JazakAllah.

  • Nigeria:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Ismaila I. Ahmed from Osi, Kwara State reported: The Hilal of Ramandhan was though not sighted tonight, 16/05/2018 at Ilorin, Kwara state, Nigeria probably due to cloudy weather condition in the locality. However, announcement was broacasted, by His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto and the Head of Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, on the sighting of the month of Ramadhan in many states of Nigeria. Thursday has therefore been declared the 1st of Ramadhan 1439AH in Sha Allah.

  • South Africa:


    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Rashid Motala from Durban reported: On the evening of Wednesday 16th May 2018, the Hilaal WAS sighted in South Africa (in many locations). Therefore Ramadaan 1439 will commence on Thursday 17th May 2018 in South Africa.

  • Sri Lanka:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Suhail Patel from Colombo reported: Crescent for the month of Ramazan was not sighted anywhere in Sri Lanka due to bad weather. Therefore, Sha'ban will complete 30 days and Ramadan stars on Friday, May 18, 2018.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Mr Nular Bary from Colombo reported: Today 29th. Sha'ban 1439 H (16/05/2018) raining evening the Colombo western sky was cloudy, the new Moon of Ramadan was not sighted anywhere in country as it was raining evening in entire country, no positive sighting was reported to The Colombo Grand Mosque Hillal Committee, till 8 pm. (as our sunset was at 6;20pm and Moonset was 7;19pm. today) Hence the Committee decided to complete the month of Sha'ban1439H with 30days and the 1st.of Ramadan will Start on 18th. May, Friday 2018" In Sha Alah" in Sri Lanka

  • Trinidad and Tobago:


    1. Seen: MCW member Mr Umar Abdullah from Bon Accord, Tobago reported: The crescent moon to commence the month of Ramadhan 1439 AH was looked for after the sunset of Wednesday 16th May 2018. Reports from all committees locally and regional confirm that the moon was SIGHTED. We have accepted these reports and has declared that the month of Sha'Baan 1439 AH will complete 29 days and the 1st night of Ramadhan 1439 AH is the night of Wednesday 16th May 2018, and the first day of Ramadhan 1439 AH is the day of Thursday 17th May 2018.

    1. Seen: Wifaqul Ulama Administrator of Britain reported: Alhumdolillah, Moon was sighted at multiple locations in Britain. Wifaqul Ulama have therefore decided that Ramadhan1439 will begin from Thursday, the 17th of May 2018.
