Al urjoonul qadeem of Safar 1442: October 16, and October 15, 2020

On right is the old Crescent Moon of Safar 1442 AH, seen on October 15, 2020. (Photo on the right is provided by MCW member Mr AR Sugeng Riyadi from Rowasiya Observatory, Bendo Ketitang Juwiring Klaten Central Java Indonesia. This waning crescent was captured approx 25 minutes before sunrise.

MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: This morning (Thursday October 15, 2020) at 6:46, I sighted the waning crescent of Safar. It was a very easy sighting from home.

New Crescent Moon of Rabi-al-Awwal 1442:
The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on October 16, 2020 (Friday) at 19:31 UT.

On October 16, the moon can not be seen any where in the world. On October 17, it may be seen in Middle-East, Africa, and Americas. On October 18, it is visible in the rest of the world (See visibility curves).

October 16, 2020 (Friday):


The earliest reported sighting of the new crescent was on October 17, Saturday from Kozhikode, Kerala, India.

October 17, 2020 (Saturday):

  • Australia:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Imam Abul Qasim Rizvi, Imam Juma Melbourne reported: Crescent of the month of Rabiul Awwal 1442 AH has not been sighted anywhere in Australia In’Sha’Allah Sunday 18th October will be 30th Safar al Mudhaffar 1442 AH. In’Sha’Allah Monday 19th October will be the first of Rabiul Awwal 1442 AH.

    2. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Shabbir Ahmed, President of Qubaa association of Western Sydney, NSW reported: Today (Saturday) 17th of October 2020, the Hilal of RABI ‘UL AWWAL 1442 has not been sighted anywhere in Australia. Therefore, the month of RABI ‘UL AWWAL 1442 will begin from Monday, 19th October 2020.

  • Chile:


    1. Not Seen: but seen in other location: MCW member Muhammad Sohail from Coquimbo reported: In Coquimbo city of Chile the new moon is not sighted due to heavy clouds but muslim brother from Panama inform that they have seen the new moon of Rabi ul awal.

  • Egypt:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from Cairo reported: On Sat. Oct 17th, 2020, From Ma'adi (29.97°N, 31.25°E), South Cairo, Hilal of Rabii I, moon was not Seen. I started my attempt just after Maghrib prayers at 17:50, 28 minutes after apparent sunset(17:22). Admittedly, this may have been a bit late, but the illuminated portion of the Moon was ~1.4 magnitude/arcsec2 below the threshold of point source visibility, given the prevailing conditions; The Temperature, Pressure and Relative humidity were 28°C, 991mB, and 35% respectively. I could not see the Hilal.

Not Seen: MCW Zaid Duch from GUJARAT, INDIA reported: “On Saturday, 17th of October 2020 (29 Safar, 1442) between 18:10 to 18:55 (Sunset 18:11 & Moonset 18:52) at Location: Navi Masjid, Nadiad, Gujarat, India; we group of 3 people attempted to sight the crescent moon (Hilal) of Rabiul Awwal. We were not able to sight the Hilal, the western horizon was mostly covered with clouds.”

    2. Seen: MCW member Rasheed Usman, Kozhikode, Kerala reported: Please be informed that as per the information by the Qazi of Kapad, Kozhikode Kerala the Rabilul Awwal is declared today Saturday evening confirming the sighting of hilal by 3 persons. All the Qazis in the State declared the start of the month accordingly.

    3. Not Seen: MCW member Yusuf Idara from New Delhi reported: Moon Sighting for the month of *Rabi al-Awwal* (3rd month of the Islamic Calendar). Moon wasn't sighted todRukyat Hilal of Rabiul Awal 1442 AH was conducted by Assalaam Observatory and BMKG Team on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at PPMI Assalaam Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo Central Java Indonesia.

Seen: MCW member AR Sugeng Riyadi from Rowasiya Observatory Central Java Indonesia reported: The new crescent of Rabiul Awal 1442 AH was not sighted even by telescope, because they west sky was cloudy. The moon was captured by my friend at Ponorogo, East Java. The 1st of Rabiul Awal 1442 AH in Indonesia starts on Sunday, October 18, 2020. ay, on Saturday October 17. Sunday, 18th October, will be 30th Safar. Monday, 19th October will be *1st Rabi al-Awwal, 1442 Hijri*.

    1. Seen: MCW member Muhammad Abubakar Said from Mombasa reported: Today Saturday 17th October /29th Safar 1442. I saw the crescent and the horns of the crescent were facing 3 to 9 o'clock.

  • Mauritius:


    1. Seen: MCW member Nissar Ahmad Ramtoola from Port Louis reported: The new moon was sighted tonight, Saturday 17 October 2020 at St Martin and Bain des Dames in Mauritius. Sky was clear. First reported visibility was from St Martin @ 6.30pm. Sunset was @ 6.13pm. Hence Sunday 18 October 2020 will be the 1st day of Rabi Ul Awwal 1442. Eid e Milaad Un Nabi (saw) will be celebrated on Thursday 29 October 2020.

  • Nigeria:

Seen: MCW member HabibuRahman Yunus, Yola, Adamawa State reported: Alhamdulillah I've just sighted the new crescent moon for the blessed month of Rabi al-Awwal today 17th October 2020 at about 18:15 hrs (22 minutes after sunset) here in Aliyu Musdafa College, Yola Town, Yola South Local Government of Adamawa State.

  • South Africa:


    1. Seen: MCW member Rashid Motala from Durban reported: On the evening of Saturday 17 October 2020, the Hilaal WAS sighted in South Africa. Therefore Rabi-ul-Awwal 1442 will commence on Sunday, 18 October 2020 in South Africa.

  • Sri Lanka:


    1. Not Seen: MCW member Nular Bary from Colombo reported: Today 29th. of Safar 1442 (17/10/2020.) evening the Colombo western sky was cloudy the New Moon of Rabi-al-Awwal was not seen anywhere in the Island. Hence we'll complete the month of Safar with 30 days and start the month of Rabi-al-Awwal 1442 19th Monday September 2020. in Sri Lanka. InShaAllah.

  • Tanzania:


    1. Seen: MCW member Hamza Rijal from Tiny Island of Zanzibar reported: The Hilal was sighted this Saturday evening October 17, 2020 in the tiny Island of Zanzibar, the end of the 29 Safaar 1442 AH. The official first day of Rabil-al-Awal will correspond with Sunday, 18 October 2020 almost in all part of East Africa; include Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.

  • Trinidad and Tobago:


    1. Seen: MCW member Umar Abdullah from Bon Accord, Tobago reported: Today, Saturday, 17th October 2020, after sunset we looked for the new moon of Rabi'ul Awwal 1442 AH. The moon was SIGHTED. Therefore the month of Safar, 1442 has completed 29 days. Hence the 1st night of Rabi'ul Awwal 1442 would be the night of Saturday 17th October 2020 and the first day of Rabi'ul Awwal 1442 would be Sunday 18th October 2020.     1. Not Seen: MCW member Juned Patel from Bolton Lancshire reported: “On Saturday, 17th of October 2020 (29 Safar 1442 AH) between 18:00 to 18:55 (Sunset 18:08 & Moonset 18:49) at Location: Edge Hill Rd, Bolton, UK; I attempted to sight the crescent moon (Hilal) of Rabi-al-Awwal. I was not able to sight the Hilal, the western horizon was completely covered with very dense clouds.”

    2. Not Seen: but seen in other location: Wifaqul Ulama Administrator of Britain reported: The Hilaal for Rabiul-Awwal 1442 was not sighted in the UK on Saturday, October 17. It was sighted in our Moon sighting zone. Wifaqul Ulama Shura have therefore decided that the month of Rabi? al-Awwal has begun. The 1st day of Rabi? al-Awwal 1442 will be on Sunday, 18th of October 2020.

  • USA:


    1. Seen: Mr Joynal Abedin from Albany NY reported: The Hilal was sighted this Saturday evening October 17, 2020 in the latham , Albany of New York 14211. the end of the 29 Safaar 1442 AH. The sky was clear, the moon was visible 6:44 pm. With a naked eye. The official first day of Rabil-al-Awal will correspond with Sunday, October 18th 2020.

    2. Seen: Mr Lavon L. Brown from Princeton NJ reported: The hilal was sighted at around 6:38 pm in West Windsor, NJ in the parking lot of The Muslim Center of Greater Princeton. The moon was at about 5 degrees altitude with the crescent points at approx. 1 to 7 o’clock. Three Muslim men, an adult Muslim woman and three children sighted it in this area.

    3. Seen: Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announced: The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that Sunday, October 18th, 2020, will be the first day of the month of Rabi al-Awwal, 1442 A.H. for the entire region of North America.
      This determination is based on the fact that there were verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Saturday, October 17th, 2020 in Miami and Orlando, Florida.

    4. Seen: MCW member Mohamedraza H.Janmohamed from Sanford FL reported: The Moon-sighting Sub-committee wishes to inform the community that the new crescent was sighted in Orlando, FL, as well other cities on Saturday, October 17, 2020. Therefore, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2020 is established as the 1st Day of Mahe Rabi-ul-Awwal, 1442 AH.

    5. Seen: MCW member Shahnoor Syed, On Behalf of Mahdavia Ruiyat e Hilal of Chicago, IL reported: Faqir Abulfatah Nusrat hereby declares that the Hilal of Rabi ul Awwal was sighted at multiple locations across Mainland United States by our Shahideen on the 29th of Safar. As such 1st of Rabi ul Awwal will be on Sunday, 18 October, 2020.

    6. Seen: Mr Imad Marzk from North Cambridge, MA reported: Just wanted to report seeing the Crescent on Saturday Oct 17 around 6:20 pm - 6:35 pm. It was 1-7 clock shape, and to the left of where the Sunset. The sky was clear, and it was not difficult seeing it with the naked eyes.

    1. Seen: MCW member Moulana Imtiyaz Misbahi, Imam Of Masjid Noor-e-Mohammedi from Lusaka reported: Alhamdolillah the musalleen of Masjid e Noor e Mohammedi Lusaka Zambia have sighted the moon for Rabi ul Awwal 1442 on 17th October 2020.

    1. Seen: MCW member Ayub Mahomed from Harare reported: On October 17, the moon was sighted in Zimbabwe. Tomorrow Sunday 18th October will be ist Rabiual Awwal Inshallah.

  • Egypt:


    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Hisham M. Hamed from Cairo reported: On Sunday, Oct 18th, 2020, From Ma'adi (29.97°N, 31.25°E), South Cairo, Hilal of Rabii I SEEN Clearly. The Hilal was apparent while the Muezzen was calling to Maghrib prayers, ~17:21 (UT+2)

  • USA:


    1. Seen: MCW member Dr Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg VA reported: Unfortunately, last evening (10/17/2020) the atmospheric conditions did not cooperate. So, I was unable to see the crescent. Today (Sunday, October 18, 2020), approximately at 2:59 pm EDT, the crescent moon would have been due south. Using a pair of binoculars (7X50), I started looking for the crescent at 2:57 pm. The first binocular sighting was at around 3:07 pm. Immediately after, the moon was seen with the naked eye. In the evening on my way to my sighting location, I saw the crescent with naked eye at 6:46 pm (sunset: 6:41 pm).
